Sculptures of Measure

In history, weatherable sculptures are the time-proven way to project important causes and values into the future-sturdy markers that cannot be easily moved or broken, lovely enough to inspire guardians, that they may last beyond the news clips, the movies; even the music of the day. Monuments literally become messengers of the cultures that spawn them. From Rushmore to the immortal Sphinx they are vaults for values; beacons to guide us today and to remind tomorrow “This is where you should look!”

Matthew “Timeless” Welter has produced fine wooden sculptures from his Nevada-based studios, Timeless Sculptures for decades and as his skills have grown, so too have his sculptures. Now a veteran sculptor of over forty years, Welter's latest undertakings include monumental works which typify the wonder, passion and ambition that has defined his long career.

Below, enjoy the archive of Matthew's monuments and consider the role of monuments in our world view ...

Washoe Woman Monumental SculptureOne recent undertaking entitled “Washoe Woman” stands over 16 ft. tall. She is carved from a single, huge trunk of western-red cedar. The commemoratory work now resides at the commissioner's home on the west shore of Lake Tahoe, where she towers over the mysterious waters.

Hand of Order sculpture
Hand of Order was commissioned by a client, to be shared at the Famous Burning Man Festival for the show themed American Dream, 2008. She stands 30 feet tall and is held aloft in the desert's high winds by a distinctive pedestal designed to resemble a collapsing structure. Welter's futuristic Statue of Liberty is rising above the turmoil!

Hand of Order monumental size sculpture by Matthew Welter. She is carved from a solid cedar stump with roots attached, turned up-side-down.

The commissioner paid $100,000 for Hand of Order in 2008, then he had it appraised for an insurance policy, the appraisal came back at $300,000...not bad considering the mortgage collapse that same year. No word on how the rest of the client's portfolio did...

after appearing at various events and even one political protest...

Hand of Order was shared pubicly at a Marina on the south shore of Lake Tahoe for an 18 month showing where she was seen by thousands...

Before creating Hand of Order, “Timeless” created the 8 foot tall Secret Power of Attraction as a study for her contemporized hand and torch... “The Secret” was also shared at the fabulous Burning Man Festival and also at a sister event in Austin Texas called “Flipside”. The sculpture was designed as an icon to represent the The Law Of Attraction...

A family contacted Timeless Sculptures. They had lost their 22 year old son, a fire fighter, in a tragic accident and could not be consoled. We carved this memorial for Danny Loux as per the mother's instructions and installed it at their home, amid a sweet ceremony.

The mother later told us the family began to heal that day...

Many trees are lost that are actually old friends. Often Timeless Sculptures is asked to remake the stumps into wildlife representations as a way to fill that awkward hole in the sky...

A client had a home filled inside and out with world-class sculptures by famous artists. They needed just the right sculpture as an entrance-piece, to greet their guests. We created this 18 foot contemporary fine art piece for the spot titled Mystic Rythms and it turned out to be the perfect sculpture for their setting.

A restaurant in Tahoe City lost a tree and asked us to create a huge cut-throat trout. It was 10 feet tall and we mounted it on their tree stump.
