Intersection 395/50 has long been the called the "Ol' Cross Roads of Nevada"

Could Carson City, NV host the next of 36 already existing freedom parks?

The Location

The crossing of two transcontinental interstates, Highways 395 and 50 has long been known as “The Ol' Cross Roads of Nevada.” One of the West’s oldest intersections, it is scheduled for major revisions which will underscore the intersection’s role as one of three designated “gateways” to Nevada’s beautiful capital.

At each gateway, a “portal” is of special interest to community planners: open spaces, parks, perhaps something visual, of cultural, or community value. While plans for the portals at the north and east are progressing, the southern portal is more challenging, due in part to the availability and value of the surrounding land.

The Concept

In the summer of 2003, Timeless Sculptures’ owner, Matthew G. Welter, presented a proposal, first to Nevada’s Department of Transportation (NDOT) and later, to Carson City’s mayor, two supervisors, the Director of Parks and Recreation and most recently, to the city’s Director of Redevelopment—who has been especially encouraging. Welter’s proposal calls for a monumental sculpture park to mark and celebrate the cause of freedom. The park would be a sort of time capsule for the values held dear by Nevadans, a statement to all who enter Nevada from the west, and a reminder as they leave. For the fastest growing state in America, for the “Don’t tell me what to do state,” what better statement then the timeless theme of freedom?

This is an artist's conception of what the proposed Freedom Park could look like.

The proposal calls for using land already owned by NDOT: an “elongated crescent” of land between Timeless Sculptures and the soon-to-be revised intersection. The monuments to be displayed in the park would be not unlike those works-in-progress seen by passing motorists in the work yard adjacent to the studios. The landscaping in the park would be similar to that of the sculpture gardens at Timeless Sculptures: wood chips, plants, stone slabs, stumps, hollows, breaks, cinders – maybe a fountain or two made of polished natural specimens taken from the forest floor. A small parking area would service a foot and bicycle path meandering through the inspiring park.

A Freedom Park has been proposed for the southern gateway to the captial of the fastest growing state in America.

"Freedom is not only the cause of our time, it is the cause of all time."

The Means

Timeless Sculptures will seek no public funds for the monuments to be displayed. Instead, the huge sculptures will be funded by corporate entities and private sponsors; their icons and/or names cast in bronze on or near the base of the artworks. Many works would be designed and executed by Matthew Welter and some of his more accomplished apprentices. Some of the works may be on loan from other sculptors, honored by a showing at the high-profile locale. This would provide a somewhat rotating display as consigned works will be offered for sale.

Plans are being developed for a “Sponsorship Fountain” to be erected at the northeast corner of the studio’s current sculpture garden viewable to some 23 million motorists annually. The striking fountain is designed to display the current icons of sponsors who help with equipment, services, even funds. In this way, the artists will acknowledge corporate sponsors proud to be associated with the theme of global freedom. The Sponsorship Fountain will be Timeless Sculptures’ chance to gain the trust of potential sponsors for the actual towering monuments. Similar kudos will be posted to the index page of this popular website as well.

The project will enlist the help of other people passionate about their own creative callings, the likes of those the company has attracted for some 35 years. This has been the motivation for the company’s Assistance Program. The company also hosts a more structured Apprenticeship Program for those who wish to take their involvement to the next level of commitment.

Sponsors will be acknowledged on location and on our show-piece website.
